Black Market Boutique is Moving Under Ground

On January 20 an overflowing toilet in an upstairs tenants apartment closed Black Market Boutique indefinitely. Since the accident, I have chosen to vacate the building at 2010 N State while the landlord chooses how to proceed with repairing the water damage and asbestos remediation.

Its been a fabulous five years serving Bellingham’s most eccentric fashion needs! I’m still in love with vintage clothing and costumes, and am excited to reinvent my business in a new context. On Saturday March 28th and Sunday the 29th I will be having a big garage sale at my new warehouse in the Sunset Pond Business Park, selling off fixtures and other retail accouterments.

I am also planning several other themed shopping events for spring and summer in and around Bellingham. You can subscribe to our email list on the left hand side of the page if you want notifications about events! I will still be buying vintage, with a focus on online and special event sales, so email or facebook message me if you like. I am also interested in collaborative projects, good ideas, etc. so don’t hesitate to reach out if you feel the whim. Hopefully I will have my phone reinstalled in the next few days, we will have the same phone number we have always had 360-756-9440.

I’ve always been good at change. I feel really positive about what the future holds, and downright excited about what a truly “underground” Black Market Boutique will look like. Private shopping parties? Personal shopping? Exciting new online adventures? Inside the industry photo blog? Fashion shows? Design collaborations?

I will always feel proud of what I built at the corner of State and James. It was beautiful, immersive, and full to the brim with joy and creativity. I loved every day there, but that does not make this big change a tragedy. Its an opportunity for me to dust off my business plan, and begin building something else amazing! Not knowing exactly what that will be is half the fun.

Thank you, to everyone who was been involved in Black Market Boutique, customers, consignors, friends, artists, and employees.

I will be contacting current consignors over the course of March as I dismantle the epic pile of stuff in my warehouse. Please be patient and understanding, but don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions.

Quick and Dirty Costume Lab

Quick and Dirty Costume Lab

Need a few finishing touches to bring your Halloween costume to the next level? Totally stumped on what you should wear? Saturday 10/25/14 join us for the Quick and Dirty Costume Lab. We will have several guest costumers and seamstresses on hand to give you great ideas and guidance to DIY. We will also be doing free (yes I said FREE) “quick and dirty” costume sewing all day long.

Need those felt fins attached to your fish costume? Wings attached to a unitard? Lace, fringe, or tulle sewn on to complete the look? We are here to help! If we can do it in ten minutes, we will zip it out for you at no charge. (you will be amazed at how much costume magic can happen in just 10 minutes)

This event will be a hootenany! Bring your bits and pieces, your ideas, or just yourself, and we will hook you up with a one of a kind costume. We have been collecting some fun materials, but feel free to bring your own or even some exciting trims to donate to other Halloweeners.

We will have a book of costume ideas to peruse if you are at a loss for great ideas! Lets make 2014 a Halloween to remember and say good bye to those cheap polyester costumes that come in bags.

Costuming A Chorus Line

Abe Lincoln
Some of my best childhood memories are of scampering around The Tacoma City Ballet and Pantages Theater, following around after my mother while she measured, marked and pinned dancers for costumes. My mother designed costumes for The Tacoma City Ballet for 6 years while my sisters and I took dance classes. Now as an adult, I just finished costuming my very own show “A Chorus Line” for the Bellingham Theater Guild. Putting together a show of any kind is hard work! I signed on to do 23 matching costumes for the final number of “A Chorus Line” (on a shoe-string budget, I might add.) I may not have ever costumed a full stage show before, but I certainly have years of experience watching the process, and I felt confident that I could do this huge project.

Victoriana in Fashion

Victoriana 1

In 2013, Whatcom Museum hosted their first “Victorian Secrets” event: an evening mixer at the museum where patrons could peruse Victorian objects and Clothing (on display from my personal collection and from Teravintage jewelry, owned by my friend Terri) compete in a Victorian themed trivia contest, and try their hands at Victorian crafts. For 2014’s event, I was asked to speak at the Whatcom Museums weekly AHA! After Hours Arts series about the progression of Victorian fashion.
